There has been a long debate about plastic surgery and how it may or may not help with self esteem and body image issues. However, this debates seems more important with the rise in teenagers having plastic surgery and altering their bodies. According to the cover story in today's USA Today,Cosmetic Surgeries: What Children Will Do to Look 'Normal', over 160,000 children had plastic surgery in 2008. The story mentions surgeries ranging from creating an outer ear to a teenage girl who had liposuction because she felt her calves were too thick. Which one or both constitute the surgery being medically necessary? Does psychological well being justify plastic surgery? Healthcare Reform
There is much more talk lately about healthcare reform. Unlike the last push for reform in the early 1990's, even the medical industry is on board. The United States is the only developed nation that does not have a national health care system. President Obama has developed a proposal to cover uninsured Americans but the Republicans have concerns over the impact it will have on Americans and their current healthcare options and quality. If you want to more about the reform, check out CNN's website on What You Need To Know About Health Care Reform. Our collection also have sources for you about health care, reform, and the options that are being proposed:Health Care

fossils, teeth, and eggs!!!

We have a new display in the library showcasing fossils. The display includes teeth from fish like the giant C. megalodon and from vertebrates like the horse, bison, and elephant.

We also have on display some ostrich eggs, which are roughly the same size as dinosaur eggs would have been.

The display is courtesy of Dr. William Straight, Professor of Geology here at NOVA Loudoun. His paper, BONE LESIONS IN HADROSAURS: COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHIC IMAGING AS A GUIDE FOR PALEOHISTOLOGIC AND STABLE-ISOTOPIC ANALYSIS, is now published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. Check out the press release for more details. You can access the whole article through the BioOne database available through the library. It is listed in our Articles database under Natural Sciences and Math collection. A printed copy is also available in the library with the display.
See guys, our professors know what they are talking about :)
So come on in and check it out!!!

Supreme Court Justice Nominee
(Photo: The Oyez Project, Collection of the Supreme Court of the United States)With the upcoming retirement of Supreme Court Justice David Souter, President Obama has the task of appointing his replacement. His nominee is Sonia Sotomayor. She is considered a liberal judge and would keep the current balance on the Court. She would be only the third woman in history to sit on the Supreme Court and the first Hispanic. To find out more about Sonia Sotomayor, check out the article, Push to confirm Sotomayor for Supreme Court: Republicans face uphill battle in defeating high court nominee, from MSNBC.
