Immigration

You may have heard or watched President Bush's most recent press conference from last Thursday. He spoke about many big issues, wrapping up with comments on a proposed bill about immigration, one of the biggest and most constant issues in the United States today.

The Loudoun Campus Library has several books about immigration. Whatever your views, here are a few new ones you might want to take a look at:

Immigrant America: A Portrait
by Alejandro Portes and Rubén G. Rumbaut
JV 6450 .P67 2006

From Library Journal: "These authors project a very positive attitude toward the role that immigrants play in American life. Negatively, source countries may suffer "brain (or labor) drain," while the United States mostly gains from the newcomers' drive, energy, and cultural diversity. Highly recommended for general readers and policymakers.
"

Lockout: Why America Keeps Getting Immigration Wrong when Our Prosperity Depends on Getting It Right by Michele Wucker
JV 6483 .W83 2006

From Publisher's Weekly: "Bringing in 'the world's best and brightest' is critical to the economy, she contends, providing the high-skilled workers . . . and links to foreign markets that America needs to grow and maintain its global competitiveness. . . . May inflame the gnawing economic insecurities behind American isolationism."

Whatever It Takes: Iillegal Immigration, Border Security, and the War on Terror by J.D. Hayworth with Joseph J. Eule
JV 6483 .H386 2006

With an introduction by Sean Hannity, Rep. Hayworth's (R-Ariz) book leans much further to the right than Portes's or Wucker's: "
The next September 11: if we don't regain control of our borders, how can we prevent it?"

This month's Hot Topic on the library Web site also has to do with immigration. Check out Web sites dealing with Illegal Immigration on the Hot Topics site, compiled by Sybil Stokols.

New books often are placed on display on the first floor of the library (LR 249) for a few weeks before being shelved in the circulating collection areas upstairs. Keep an eye out for new books on display!
